Summer leagues can have a lasting effect

Today’s number on the sports page of the News-Gazette was 44.  That’s the number of rbis that Adam Davis (left) accrued this summer while playing for the Madison Mallards in the Northwoods League.  That was good for sixth in the league.  He accomplished this in part behind a .328 average.  In case you’re wondering, Matt [...]

Dittman, Davis and Parr honored by Northwoods League

Congrats to Adam Davis, Josh Parr and Matt Dittman who made the Northwoods League postseason All-Star team. All three had excellent summers for their respective teams.  For the Rochester Honkers, Matt Dittman hit .332 with 44 rbis.  Parr, who was with the Madison Mallards, hit .307 and scored 41 runs and stole 21 bases.  Also [...]

Mish-mash of summer happenings

Congrats to Brian de la Torriente who was named to the Prospect League’s West Division All-Star team.  The East and West played to a 3-3 tie on July 6.  de la pitched one inning allowing a run and striking out two batters.  The Northwoods League All-Star classic is coming up in one week.  It’s no [...]

Illini crush Chicago State 18-2 in home opener

Wow, the University of Illinois baseball team sure knows how to put on a show for their home opener, eh?  The Illini crushed the Chicago State Cougars last night by the score of 18-2.  The outcome of the game almost seemed apparent by the end of the second inning.  By then, Illinois had gotten off [...]

Around the Big Ten: Argo takes Player of the Week honors

For his efforts last week during the Spring Break Trip, Willie Argo became the second Illinois player to be honored by the Big Ten with the Player of the Week award.  Argo (left) had it coming.  His consistent offense throughout the week made me wonder if he would be considered for the award especially after [...]

Around the Big Ten: MSU and OSU doing quite nicely

We’re still in the middle of the Spring break trip but seeing it’s Monday, I’ll post this anyway.  A quick look at the standings:   Team Record Pct. Record Pct. A comfortable 10-4 win over NDSU makes it two in a row for Illini

Two in a row!  That’s the first time that’s happened this season but some reason, I don’t think it will be the last.  Looking at the recap and boxscore of today’s game against North Dakota State University Bison, it just seems that nothing could go wrong down in Winter Haven, Florida.  Illinois got good pitching [...]

3/16 Post Weekend Debriefing: Matt Dittman gets Big Ten Player of the Week honors

Let’s talk about the fun stuff first. Matt Dittman was awarded the co-Big Ten Player of the Week yesterday!  He hit .615 for the weekend with five rbis and scored seven.  Ditt’s timing was impeccable as his big game came in the 11-10 win against #12 Coastal Carolina when he went 4 for 5 with [...]

Is the Illini baseball team showing signs of improvement?

Ok, considering we came into the weekend 1-5, we had a pretty darn good weekend.  On a broader scale, we went 2-2 for the weekend which is a whole lot better than the ultimate result we had been getting.  Not to mention the exciting win against #12 Coastal Carolina Chants.  Maybe it doesn’t it doesn’t [...]

Upset!!

Wow.  Simply amazing.  I admit, on Friday night when I left town for the weekend right after #12 Coastal Carolina scored 6 in the first inning, I didn’t hold much hope for an Illini victory.  When I got to my destination and checked the score, I literally had to do a double-take.  We won?  Wow!! [...]
