we can thank Purdue’s surprisingly slow start for keeping us out of the cellar.

Illini swept in Keith LeClair Classic

Five in a row.  I’ll bet Coach Hartleb will have a few words with the team in the locker room after this one.
It was a tough one to lose.  Once again, Illinois had the lead only to lose it.  They were up by scores of 4-1 and 5-3 but West Virginia pecked away till [...]

Weekend Roundup: Dittman gets tournament honors

Now that the dust has settled from the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge, we can get a sense where the Big Ten look like now.  No surprise… Ohio State is at the top, getting a quick 5-1 start on season.

Illini end Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge with loss to St John’s

Well, the Illini gave St John’s a good fight.  It was pretty much the story of two games within one.  The first one where the Illini had them strung up in the first five innings, winning 4-0.  It was indeed the 3-run fifth inning when Illinois did most of the damage keyed by a 2-run [...]

Illini gored by the USF Bulls 12-3 at day 2 of Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge

…and then reality set in.
ok, we weren’t going to win EVERY game this season.  But the first loss of the year is sometimes a little harder to take.  After beating 3-0 Notre Dame Friday night, Illinois couldn’t come up with the offense and certainly not the pitching to defeat the winless University of South [...]

Illini quick out of the starting gate: defeat Notre Dame 11-1

That’s the way to start the season!
Consider that the Illinois baseball team went into the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge cold having missed the first weekend of play due to weather while their opponents, Notre Dame, got a three game head start.
Consider also that same Notre Dame team won all three of their games last [...]

Former Illini Robinson 1-2 in PCL-IL All-Star Game

The Pacific Coast League lost to the International League 6-5 in their annual All-Star Game last night in front of a crowd of 16,000.  Former Illini Chris Robinson did his part for the PCL, though.  As starting catcher, he went 1-2 and scored a run.
Here is the box score.
My fellow blogger Teddy Ballgame on [...]

Feature article on Illini Dittman and his team’s trip to Alaska

There was a great article on Matt Dittman in the Libertyville Review.  In summer league action, Ditt made the trip up to the Great North so his Lake Erie Monarchs could take on Alaska Goldpanners (summer league teams have such great nicknames, I think).
Don’t think Dittman didn’t lose some sleep over the extended [...]

Where our Illini are playing this summer

College summer leagues have already begun their seasons and Illinois players are among those playing.  The University of Illinois baseball program has sent 21 players throughout the the country to 13 teams in nine different summer leagues.
The Northwoods League, always a big client of the U of I, will see eight players from Illinois (Pete [...]

Illinois eliminated from Big Ten Tourney by Minnesota

Day and night.  That’s how I’d describe the difference between Minnesota on Thursday and Minnesota on Friday.  And unfortunately, Illinois had to play them Friday.
The same Gopher team that couldn’t buy a hit against Indiana the day before and had its pitching pounded by their offense, came out a changed team Friday.  They first played [...]
