Illini Weekend Preview: Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge

Ok, this time, it’s for real.  No chance of a winter weather advisory down in Clearwater, Florida so Play Ball!
The Illinois baseball team are probably on their way right now to Florida in order to participate in the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge (I once asked someone in the know why the “Big East” was [...]

One more month

Hard to believe that one month from today when students are still in their first week of classes, Illinois is scheduled for their first game of the 2010 season.  It’s a HOME game to boot.  Some of the cynics out there are wondering if given our Illinois weather, we’ll be able to get our weekend [...]

Team Canada took the Bronze in Baseball’s World Cup.  Former Illini catcher Chris Robinson can take a little credit for their success.  For the Cup tournament, he went 11 for 29 (.379) with 8 runs scored and 6 rbis.

Robinson taking the field at Wrigley Sunday

Former UI catcher Chris Robinson will be at Wrigley Field tomorrow.  His AAA Iowa Cubs will be taking on the Las Vegas 51s 1:20pm Sunday in Chicago as a special promotion.
Iowa (56-57) and Las Vegas (57-57) have almost identical won-loss records so it should be an excellent game.
Robinson made the Pacific Coast League [...]

Former Illini Robinson interviewed by Chicago Trib

Chris Robinson who was a catcher for the University of Illinois and played for Team Canada in this year’s Olympics, did a Q&A for the Chicago Tribune.
I was a bit puzzled by the Trib’s last question though.
Q: Cubs vs. Tigers, World Series. Who do you root for?
Umm, considering that Robbie is currently on the roster [...]

Cuba enjoys success at expense of US, Canada

Three days into Olympic baseball and powerhouse Cuba has already shown they are a force to be reckoned with.  They are undefeated through three games having beaten US, Canada and Japan.
The US took gold in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney but it will take a Cinderella story for that to happen this time.  At this [...]
