After a monster weekend against Penn State, Illini Willie Argo garners the Big Ten Player of the Week award.  The Davenport, Iowa native took the award based on his 8 for 12 performance while Illinois swept the Nittany Lions.  Argo drove home 8 runs and scored six with the help of three homeruns, a [...]

Willie Argo continues to hunt Nittany Lion pitching; Illini win 11-5

Maybe it’s early to make such a prediction but I smell a Big Ten player of the Week award going to Willie Argo.
Today, Argo slammed two homeruns in Illinois’ 11-5 win over Penn State at Medlar Field.   In addition to the two dingers, he was 3 for 5 with 5 rbis.  Add that to the [...]

Argo slugs in comeback win against PSU

Willie Argo was one single shy of the cycle as Illinois defeated Penn State 7-3 at Medlar Field in University Park, Pennsylvania.  Argo was 3 for 4 with 3 runs and 3 rbis.
It was another comeback win for the Illini against a Big Ten team.  They were down 3-0 in the top of the 5th [...]

Final thoughts on the 2008 Big Ten Tournament

I’m back in Urbana, Illinois and before we close the book on the 2008 Big Ten Tournament, I’d like to provide some last comments and maybe some cool photos that didn’t make it into postings last week.

Michigan’s All-Big Ten Player of the Year Nate Recknagel at the plate
Once again, congratulations to the Michigan Wolverines who [...]

Saturday’s lineup at the Big Ten Tournament

Indiana catcher Josh Phegley
I’m still getting used to the fact that Indiana is still in the tournament. Obvious underdogs not just of the tourney but the Big Ten season in general, they’ve come a long way.
Coming in to the tournament as the #6 seed, they didn’t overwhelm in the first game when they lost [...]

Indiana, Michigan winners at Big 10 tourney today

Indiana defeated Penn State 11-8 and Michigan continues their winning ways by defeating Purdue 6-1.  You can read my recap of the games at The College Baseball Blog.

Indiana’s Celebration…

Penn State’s Disbelief
I will say that the PSU-IU game was one of the best games I’ve seen at the Big Ten Tournament.  Never had I seen [...]

Some assorted Big Ten Tournament photos

The newly renovated home of the Michigan Wolverine baseball team with the complicated name of “The Wilpon Baseball Complex home of Ray Fisher Stadium”.  Too much like Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  Anyway, it IS nice.

Joe Blackburn has once again gotten a mohawk like last year.

Speaking of hair and ballplayers, it looks like the Purdue [...]

Settling in at Ann Arbor, Tomorrow the Big 10 Tournament

I just rolled into Ann Arbor this evening on the aptly named “Wolverine” Amtrak line.  I’m staying at the Lamp Post Inn.  It’s a budget motel but it has the important amenity I need.  Wireless access.
When I told the motel owner my reason for being here he told me knew a few of Michigan baseball [...]
