2010 schedule features new tournaments, a cold home opener

Illinois announced that they have released their 2010 baseball schedule last week.

They’re playing in a couple new tournaments this year.  But the big surprise is that they will be opening at home.  Brr!  But hey, it’s baseball in a little over two months away and that makes me happy.

The Illinois team will be hosting the Bradley Braves at Illinois Field on February 20th and 21st for their first games of the season.  From there, the team will go on to play in the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge in Florida on February 26-28.

There are two new tournaments on the docket (at least in my memory).  In early March, Illinois will be participating in the Keith LeClair Invitational Tournament in Greenville, North Carolina and the Caravelle Resort Classic in Conway/Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Four days after the Caravelle Tournament, the boys will go on their annual Spring Break Trip when they will play six games in seven days.  All games of the Spring Trip will be played at Winter Haven, Florida.

With a stopover at Illinois State on March 30, the U of I team will come home the next day to Illinois for their “for real” home opener against Chicago State.

The Big Ten opener takes place on April 2 against Penn State at Illinois Field in a three game set.  The other Big Ten home series include Michigan, Northwestern, and Purdue.  Illinois goes on the road for Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State, and season ender, Indiana.

The Big Ten odd team out this year is Minnesota.

The Big Ten Tournament is scheduled for May 26-29.

  1. I’ll wager twenty hypothetical internet dollars that your season opening series against the Bradley Braves will not be played on February 20-21 in the state of Illinois. I just wouldn’t believe it.

  2. that’s not a bet I’d take.

We have a hard enough time getting our early April games in sometimes. :)

  3. That’s got to be a scheduling error. Unless they are planning to build a dome over Illinois Field.

  4. eeknay,

    From the Fighting Illini article:

“The Illini will open the season with a two-game home series against Bradley on Feb. 20-21”

I thought about the idea of them playing inside but I can’t think of anywhere on campus where they could hold it.

  5. i like your blog very much. Thanks for sharing information
