A quick look at the walk-ons

Jeff Huth of the News Gazette reported a couple days ago that four walk-ons have made the UI team after trying out for the team in the fall.  They include one pitcher, one outfielder, and two catchers.  Interestingly, three of them are downstaters.
There’s a nice write-up on Tanner Libby a Galesburg native, in his [...]

One More Time

A whimsical topic here.  How many of you pay attention to post-game music at Illinois Field?  You know, the song you hear as you are leaving the stands?  I always thought it had a good beat and wondered what it was.  I even asked a few in the know what it was to no avail.  [...]

Come on out to Illinois Field tonight!

It’s looking like a nice night for a ballgame for tonight’s Friday night matchup with Minnesota.  By the 6pm gametime, it looks like partly sunny and around 70 degrees.  Nice!!  This is the night for a ballgame!
Saturday will be warm but cloudy.  Rain will be coming late but as long as it’s not an [...]

Snow doesn’t deter Illinois as they sweep MSU

Snowy day
We got started early today at 11am because of the re-scheduled game from yesterday’s rained out affair.  So today instead of rain, we got snow.  Granted it wasn’t a blizzard or anything but dang, it was cold.  Towards the end of Game One, the snow stopped.  The sun even popped out for a bit [...]

Illini take 2 of 3 from #1 LSU Tigers

After soundly defeating LSU 6-2 today, one has to wonder if Saturday’s 22-10 drubbing by the Tigers was just really bad dream.
Much kudos goes to starter Ben Reeser who was one out away from a 3-hit shutout.  It was at that point, however, when the Tigers pumped some life back into the game.  An Ochinko [...]

No Roark for Illini in 2008

Roark (right) will be sitting out 2008
Some bad news for the Illini baseball team. Tanner Roark, who led the team in wins last year, won’t be playing this spring because of “academic reasons”.
Roark was integral in last year’s season for Illinois. He was a second team All Big Ten selection and led (or [...]

Illini Football deserves a nod

I don’t want too much time to go by without giving the University of Illinois football team their due.  They defeated #5 Wisconsin this past Saturday 31-26.
There have been some lean years in Illini football lately though last year, there was no doubt it was an exciting team to watch.
The profesors in my department had a [...]

Back to work for the Illini

Monday was the first day of practice for the University of Illinois baseball team,  I showed up to watch and take a few photos.
Thanks to Coach Hartleb and the staff for the privilege.  I was the only non-team member there so I felt like I had quite an exclusive.

Here’s my first look at Aaron Johnson. [...]

Joe Mercurio off to U of Maine: A case of bad timing?

News came out that last year’s backup catcher, Joe Mercurio has just signed with University of Maine.
From Lower Hudson Online:

For much of their childhood, Joe Mercurio and Myckie Lugbauer were the best catchers their age in Putnam County. Their skill eventually extended far beyond the county’s borders; as seniors they were two of [...]

Mark your calendar… Illini Baseball adding some Wednesday Games

The University of Illinois baseball team has added 3 games to the schedule to make up for games canceled for inclement weather.
The first was this past Wednesday’s game and it was pretty sparsely attended.
