First of all, don’t forget to browse through Dewi Krug’s photos from last weekend’s Baseball at the Beach Tournament in Myrtle Beach.  Great shots!

Friday’s game vs George Mason

Saturday’s game vs Coastal Carolina

Sunday’s game vs Connecticut

Up top, that’s Dewi’s photo of Saturday’s winner, Drasen Johnson getting congrats from fellow pitcher Rob McDonnell.

A quick look at the current Big Ten standings:

Team Record Pct. Record Pct.
Iowa 0-0 .000 6-1 .857
Ohio State 0-0 .000 5-2 .714
Michigan State 0-0 .000 4-2 .667
Minnesota 0-0 .000 4-2 .667
Nebraska 0-0 .000 4-3 .571
Illinois 0-0 .000 2-4 .333
Penn State 0-0 .000 2-4 .333
Indiana 0-0 .000 2-5 .286
Northwestern 0-0 .000 2-5 .286
Michigan 0-0 .000 1-5-1 .214
Purdue 0-0 .000 0-6 .000

My first gut reaction is that we’re in upside world.  Iowa is in first place with a pretty nice 6-1 record while Indiana is languishing in eighth with a 2-5.  Yes, it’s early and yes, the non-conference season really doesn’t count for much other than RPI but still this has to signify something strange.  I’ll bet this is giving the Hawkeyes a shot in confidence arm.

Purdue is starting off slow at 0-6.  A little surprising even considering their 17-34 record (6-18 Big Ten) last year.  Rumor has it they have an improved team for 2014.

And before we give the Hoosiers too much heck for their slow start, keep in mind their schedule is pretty tough.  They faced Oregon State who was #1 in the country as recent as last week.  I’m sure they’ll turn it around.

The Hawkeyes were helped in part by outfielder Taylor Zeutenhorst who was named Big Ten Player of the Week.  The Huskers’ Christian DeLeon garnered Pitcher of the Week honors and Northwestern outfielder Matt Hopfner was awarded Freshman of the Week.

As for the Illini, they’re sitting at 2-4 and waiting to break out.  This weekend, they play down in Gainesville.  Their potential victims are Florida Gulf Coast (twice) and #23 Florida.  Game time on Friday is noon.
