Illini Zack Kolakowski and J.D. Nielsen are making history of sorts. According to the Kenosha News, they’ll be the very first players signed to the new Northwoods League team based in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

J.D. Nielsen and Zack Kolakowski made a little Kenosha baseball history on Thursday and they weren’t even in town.

The University of Illinois students were the first players announced as members of the expansion Kenosha Northwoods League team, which will begin play in June at Simmons Field.

Zack Kolakowski was a redshirt last season and a infielder by trade.  J.D. Nielsen is a lefthanded pitcher in his second year at Illinois.  They will both attend a launch party on Saturday at Simmons Field where the new logo will be unveiled.

The University of Illinois baseball program and the Northwoods League have a long history of partnering together.  For years, Illinois has been sending many of our players to the NWL for summer ball action.  Those Illini fans in the Chicago area will be glad to hear about an expansion team in Kenosha.  It’s practically right across the state border.

Good luck to both J.D. and Zack in their pioneering effort!
