Illinois offensive show on Sunday takes the series from Michigan

Once again, Michigan scored first but Illinois came back to win another one from Wolverines to take the series from UM in Ann Arbor.

Michigan scored two in the first but Illinois rallied to put three on the board in the second inning thanks to consecutive singles by Aaron Johnson and Josh Parr and a sac fly by Joe Bonadonna.

By the fifth, it was knotted up again at 5.  After that though, it was all Illinois offensively.  They scored one in seventh with Brandon Wikoff singling in Parr.  Illinois rallied for four in the eighth with 6 hits and four runs then added an extra run in the ninth.

Willie Argo was 4 for 5 with a double and 3 rbis and a run for the game.  Four other Illini were good for 3 hits (Pete Cappetta, Brandon Wikoff, Aaron Johnson and Matt Dittman).

What a series for Dittman!  He was 6 for 11 with a double and a homerun.  He’s really making a statement with the bat lately.

Despite giving up five runs, Bryan Roberts gets the win against Michigan today..  He struck out six in six innings.  Aaron Martin gave up three hits but no walks and kept UM scoreless in three relief innings for the save.

Despite our decent showing in Ann Arbor, we slid in the Big Ten standings.  Illinois is currently tied for third with Ohio State behind Minnesota and Indiana.  Which makes our upcoming series with the Golden Gophers all that much more important.

Coming up:

Illinois plays Eastern Illinois at Illinois Field on Tuesday and then travels to Southern Illinois to play the Salukis on Wednesday.
